Colin Moore was born in Cape Town, lives in Barcelona and holds a doctorate in chiropractic – a medical discipline that is so popular and respected in English-speaking countries yet still largely unknown in these parts. Essentially, his work involves using a very precise manual adjustment to correct the subluxations that we all, to a greater or lesser extent, accumulate over time in our spinal column. Subluxations are vertebral misalignments that prevent vital information circulating through the central nervous system from reaching all the organs of our body smoothly. If this information reaches the various organs of our body too late, incorrectly, or in insufficient quantities, it has a negative impact on our health. We believe that reversing the cause of this state of ill health through the precise and direct physical removal of the problem—rather than temporarily alleviating the symptoms by taking painkillers or other medicines that are never harmless—is a logical and sensible solution.
One autumn afternoon, two years ago now, Colin Moore walked into our Ikiru shop and, with a broad smile, announced to us – without any further preamble – that he wanted to be our chiropractor. He said it with such conviction that we had no choice but to accept his offer. Since then, we’ve been visiting his practice regularly in the La Rivera neighbourhood, next to the imposing church of Santa María del Mar, so that he can keep the pathways of our spine clear of obstructions, freeing us from subluxations with his strong, expert hands, and so that, whilst he’s at it, he can pass on a dose of joy with his unforgettable smile and infectious optimism.
At our first meeting at the Futonllit shop, Dr Moore not only told us he wanted to be our trusted chiropractor, but also bought us a futon. We made it by hand especially for him, to his exact specifications, using natural fibres (8cm of cotton and a 5cm inner layer of natural latex) and with great care, as we always do. He’s been sleeping on it ever since, and he’s enjoyed the experience so much that he’s bought two more futons from us for a country house in the south of France where his family lives, near Montpellier. And this brings us to the main topic of this post. The thing is, we’ve discovered that Dr Colin Moore, as well as being an excellent chiropractor, is also a true master of woodwork. With his own hands – the very same ones that adjust our spines – he has built a futon base as beautiful as this one:
As he tells us, to make this handcrafted bed he has recycled old pine beams for the frame and American white oak logs for the feet. The result is a piece of furniture with character and a history (who knows what those old beams have endured before becoming a bed). We love seeing one of our handmade futons resting on a bed like this. You know what they say: long live recycling! And if you’ve got the time and a bit of skill, why not have a go at making one yourself? Do It Yourself.
